Clyde v Queen’s Park

The Bully Wee signed off 2018 with a comfortable 2-0 win over old rivals Queen’s Park at Broadwood.

Danny Lennon retained the same starting eleven which won at Cliftonhill last Saturday, with Kevin Nicoll and Kristoffer Syvertsen returning to the squad as substitutes.

The first real chance of the day fell to Barry Cuddihy with a quarter of an hour played. A nice passing move between John Rankin and David Goodwillie ended with Cuddihy being played in on goal, but his effort clipped the post.

The deadlock was broken on the half-hour mark after Rankin sent a low teasing cross into the penalty box. Goodwillie got on the end of the ball in a good scoring position, but with visiting ‘keeper Jordan Hart narrowing the angle, he unselfishly set up Jack Boyle to add the finishing touch from close range.

Five minutes before the interval, Clyde found themselves two goals to the good. Goodwillie was causing the visitors problems in the box again and cut the ball back to Chris McStay on the edge of the area, who in turn set up Cuddihy. The right-back then hit a pinpoint cross into the box, where Goodwillie was on hand to head past Hart.

Blair Currie had a relatively quiet afternoon but had to be on his toes shortly after the restart to turn behind a header from Josh Peters. 

Peters tried his luck again a few moments later, this time from longer range, but Currie held on to the ball comfortably.

The Bully Wee almost made it 3-0 when substitute Ross Lyon raced clear down the right-wing and fizzed the ball across the six-yard box, but McStay was unable to make a proper connection with his head.

McStay then came close to scoring again in the last minute but his effort from 30 yards cannoned off the crossbar.

The victory over The Spiders means that Clyde are now undefeated in their last eight games, their best run in the league since 2006.
