Recap

The Bully Wee lost to the Spiders for the second time in four days this evening, but it was after a much-improved display that could – and probably should – have earned at least a point.

As expected, a number of Clyde players were ruled out through injury and Iain Gray was a late addition to the absentees list, yielding his starting place after pulling up in the warm-up. Graham Girvan took his shirt, with Nicki Paterson, Marc McCusker and Paul Mulrooney also added to the team.

Against the wind, Clyde started well and could have scored inside the first minute. McCusker found himself with space in the box but he didn’t fully connect with his shot and Adam Strain was able to save. As Jim Duffy’s side continued to dominate play, Ryan MacBeth came within a fraction of finding the net but his low shot somehow went passed the post.

Thankfully a goal did arrive and it was largely thanks to a moment of magic by Charlie Miller. The midfielder flighted a brilliant pass over the head of Andy Millen and McCusker was on hand to finish – albeit via a less than convincing shot.

McCusker did well to work his way into another promising position soon after the goal, but Strain pulled off a fine stop and the Bully Wee were soon to pay for not getting a crucial second strike.

Poor defending was also to blame as Queen’s Jamie Longworth registered two almost identical goals in the space of five minutes. The forward was able to meet two near-post corners and beat Bryn Halliwell on both occasions, making it a very frustrating half-time whistle for Clyde.

However, an equaliser came before the hour mark. Nicki Paterson – getting ready to leave the pitch due to a hamstring complaint – met a teasing Miller free-kick and superbly headed the ball home. After celebrating the goal he was immediately replaced by Ricky Waddell.

With the match finely poised and both teams looking for a winner, it was the Spiders that got a vital third goal. David Murray was able to evade Graham Girvan and Ross McMillan and, with extra space available in the penalty box, his cutback was expertly placed into the bottom corner of the net by the advancing Michael Daly.

There was still around twenty minutes left to play and the Bully Wee battled hard to try and find a way back into the match again. However, for the first time in the match clear-cut chances were difficult to come by and the visitors held on for a very important win in their promotion challenge.
