Recap
The Bully Wee recorded back-to-back league victories for the first time this season with a fine win over Montrose at Broadwood this evening.
Danny Lennon stuck with the same side that picked up three points against Falkirk on Saturday.
The Gable Endies had an early chance when Martin McNiff was put under pressure following a pass from David Mitchell. He was dispossessed but Mitchell was able to tip the resultant attempt behind for a corner.
The corner was played quickly to Andrew Steeves who let rip with a vicious shot from distance, but Mitchell again pulled off a good stop.
The Bully Wee took a 12th minute lead after Adam Livingstone cut inside his man and delivered a cross to the back post with his weaker right foot. Chris McStay was on hand to nod the ball back to the middle of the goal, and Ally Love poked it into the net.
Montrose were left scratching their heads as to how they didn’t equalise moments later. A free-kick on the edge of the box was spilled by Mitchell, but he recovered to make a fantastic reflex save from the rebound. Ray Grant then cleared a follow-up effort off the line, and another shot was blocked by a Clyde defender before the ball was cleared to safety.
Clyde then came close to doubling their lead when David Goodwillie fizzed a low cross along the face of the goal, but Ross Cunningham couldn’t get a final touch to divert it home.
The Bully Wee added a second six minutes after the restart in spectacular style. Goodwillie teed up Ray Grant over 25 yards from goal, and he unleashed an unstoppable drive which rocketed into the bottom corner of the net.
The visitors pulled a goal back two minutes later when the unmarked Blair Lyons headed home a corner from close range.
Matty Allan then passed up a good chance for an equaliser as he failed to hit the target with effort, whilst Allan Fleming made an important save from a Martin McNiff header at the other end to prevent Clyde increasing their advantage.
The last few minutes were frantic as Montrose piled men forward in search of an equaliser, and Craig Johnston spurned two golden chances in stoppage time, first being denied by Mitchell, and then Tom Lang made a vital block from his effort.
