Clyde v Montrose

A clinical fifteen minute spell at the end of the first half at Broadwood gave The Bully Wee all three points, against a Montrose side which started the afternoon at the top of the Ladbrokes League 2 table.

Danny Lennon was forced into one change, with Ray Grant replacing the suspended Kevin Nicoll.

Clyde started brightly and Jack Boyle had the first chance of the day when David Goodwillie found him from a knock down, but Boyle’s curling left footed shot went just over the bar.

Montrose had a chance of their own when the ball fell to Jamie Redman in the middle of the box, but he blazed his effort well over.

The deadlock was broken just after the half-hour mark when Jordan Stewart did well to stop the ball from going out of play on on the wing before finding Barry Cuddihy, who in turn fed Mark Lamont. The on-loan midfielder then hit a shot from outside the area, which clipped the inside of the post on its way into the net.

A few moments later Lamont tried his luck again but Montrose ‘keeper Allan Fleming did well to parry the shot.

Fleming was called into action again when he kept out Dylan Cogill’s header, but the lead was doubled from the resulting corner. Jordan Stewart’s set piece went to the back post, where Martin McNiff was on hand to power a header home, despite Fleming getting a hand to it.

On the stroke of half-time Clyde scored their third goal when Lamont drove down the left wing before picking out David Goodwillie just inside the box. Clyde’s top scorer had his back to goal, but found time to turn and blasted a shot past Fleming to give The Bully Wee a comfortable advantage.

Clyde were quick of the traps after the interval and almost made it 4-0, with only the post denying Cogill after his header from a corner.

The visitors should have pulled a goal back when Craig Johnston was played through on goal, but Blair Currie made an excellent save with his foot to keep his clean sheet intact.

The woodwork would deny The Bully Wee again when Stewart hit a volley from a wide angle thirty yards from goal, but the ball just grazed the top of the crossbar.

Montrose also hit the woodwork in the closing stages as they hunted for a consolation, but the day would belong to Clyde, who moved within two points of the playoff places.
