Recap
James Grady once again proved to be a thorn in Clyde’s side as the on-loan Hamilton striker netted the only goal of a poor game to give Morton their first league win of the season.
Clyde welcomed back Marvyn Wilson, Ruari MacLennan, Chris Higgins and Billy Gibson to the starting line-up but had to do without injured captain Stuart Kettlewell. Morton, who had conceded seven goals in their previous two games, introduced Stewart Greacen and Grady to their side, which saw ex-Clyde midfielder Stevie Masterton in the middle of the pitch.
With Clyde choosing to play with only Pat Clarke up front, Morton were able to get a good hold on the game early on and were perhaps unlucky not to earn an early penalty when Neil McGregor appeared to flatten Weatherson on the edge of the box. Ruari MacLennan then picked up the opening yellow card of the game for a trip on Jim McAllister before Kevin Finlayson was cautioned for a shocking tackle on Dave McKay.
The Bully Wee threatened sporadically and Paul Emslie had the first shot on goal, only for the on-loan Rangers player to see his powerful drive blocked by Greacen. Dave McKay has been a good threat on the right wing for Clyde in recent weeks and his powerful cross was to provide Kevin Cuthbert with his first action of the match.
Morton were struggling to create much in the way of chances against a packed Clyde rearguard and David Hutton comfortably saved a couple of free kicks from Masterton. Ryan McGuffie then volleyed high over the bar after a knockdown by Dominic Shimmin. However, from their first clear cut chance they were able to take the lead as Ryan McGuffie’s long ball released Grady and the pint-sized striker ran through on goal from near the halfway line, before thumping past Hutton.
At half-time, Clyde chose to introduce Ricky Waddell for the ineffective Gemmill and this saw McKay join Pat Clarke up front. For the next fifteen minutes, the changes saw Clyde take control of the game but on two occasions McKay passed up on the chance to shoot and the excellent Shimmin was able to clear. Wilson then picked up his customary booking before he was replaced by Alan Trouten. Greacen then picked up a yellow card for chopping down McKay.
Morton were happy to sit on their lead but on the breakaway, Grady was always a threat. On two occasions he almost got onto the end of sloppy pass-backs by McGregor and Gibson, only to be denied by last ditch tackles. The best effort of the half came from Masterton who after a corner had been cleared back to him, chose to swing a ball towards the back post where it thumped against the cross bar with David Hutton beaten.
Clyde introduced Gary McSwegan for Alan Lowing and began to pile on the pressure to some extent and Ricky Waddell twice fired over the bar from the edge of the box. Clarke then cracked a drive across the face of the goal but no-one was able to convert the chance. Finally, McGregor almost got his head onto a late cross into the box but he was adjudged to have fouled Greacen in any case. As the final whistle blew, the relief in the home end was tangible, whilst the disappointment from the away support was even more obvious. Although Clyde had several chances, failing to have a single shot on goal over 90 minutes tells its own story.
