Recap
The Bully Wee suffered a disappointing defeat in the Highlands today in Ladbrokes League 2.
Barry Ferguson made two changes to the team following Tuesday night’s cup tie against Ayr United, with fit again Jordan McMillan and Marc McKenzie replacing the suspended Ewan McNeil and Scott Ferguson.
Elgin had the better of the early chances and Connor Quinn was forced into a good save to deny Mark Nicolson.
Chris McLeish then should have done better when through on goal and Brian Cameron put the ball over the bar from the edge of the box.
Quinn then kept out McLeish, but a goal was coming and Nicolson found space at the back post to put a first time shot into the far corner of the net.
Clyde’s best chance of the first half came when David Gormley created some space for Matt Flynn in the box, but the midfielder didn’t make a totally clean connection on the shot and home ‘keeper Cammy Mackay was able to make a block.
During the first half, The Bully Wee were surprisingly shown four yellow cards despite there not being any malice in the match and that pattern continued early in the second period, as referee Gavin Ross booked Marc McKenzie and awarded Elgin a disputed penalty after a coming together that seemed to start outside of the box. Shane Sutherland converted from the spot.
Jordan McMillan then stabbed a shot wide from just outside the away penalty area but The Black and Whites increased their lead moments later, when a cross from the right was turned into his own net by Ross Perry.
Sean Higgins gave Clyde some hope when he looped a header over Mackay and into the net, with Scott Ferguson having a good chance to make it interesting a few minutes later but he couldn’t fully connect with Scott Linton’s low free-kick.
Elgin ended the match as a contest with a fourth goal after 80 minutes, with a quick break leading to Craig Gunn rounding Quinn and tapping home from a couple of yards out.
Before the end, Clyde’s large booking count eventually proved more costly as McMillan picked up a second and was theatrically sent off the field by Mr Ross.
