Recap
Clyde secured back-to-back home victories in Ladbrokes League 2 this afternoon, following a hugely entertaining and incident-packed match against Elgin City.
Barry Ferguson opted to make no changes following last week’s win over Montrose, naming the same starting line-up and bench.
The Bully Wee made a perfect start to the match, taking the lead in the second minute. Chris Mitchell’s free-kick evaded Elgin ‘keeper Mark Hurst at the back post and the ball came off his team-mate, Liam Gordon and bounced into the net.
However, Elgin got back on level terms soon afterwards when John Gibson rashly challenged Craig Gunn in the penalty box, with the Black and White’s forward stepping up to convert the resulting penalty kick.
Clyde then had the ball in the net again when Scott Ferguson’s fine run and cross was finished by David Gormley, but the assistant referee belatedly decided that Gormley was in an offside position.
As play swung from end to end in an open contest, the visitors took the lead thanks to another penalty, this time controversially awarded for handball. Gunn again stepped forward and sent Gibson the wrong way for a second time.
After 26 minutes, the score was made 2-2. A cross was only partially cleared by the Elgin defence and Ferguson picked the ball up at the edge of the box, before curling a lovely shot into the far corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
Surprisingly, there were no more goals before half-time, but Clyde started the second half strongly and regained the lead thanks to the busy Gormley, as he got to the ball before Hurst and fired the ball home from a tight angle.
As The Bully Wee continued to dominate, Gormley hit the post with a long-range effort and Scott McLaughlin saw his volley just miss the target.
Elgin did start to look more dangerous as the match progressed though and it looked as if it would be a difficult last ten minutes of the match for Clyde as Chris Mitchell picked up a second yellow card for a foul on Dylan Easton.
Moments later though, a superb goal on the break sealed the victory. Gormley was the creator with a terrific individual build-up on the left wing and his eventual cross found Scott Linton, who blasted a volley into the roof of the net to make it 4-2.
Gormley had a chance to put some more gloss on the scoreline in injury-time, but he couldn’t pick his spot as the ‘keeper narrowed the angle.
