Recap

Clyde’s promotion bid was put back on track this afternoon, as goals from Michael Daly (2), Scott Ferguson and a debut strike by youngster Gordon Young secured a comfortable win over Elgin at Broadwood.

Jim Duffy made two changes to the team that lost to Albion Rovers on Tuesday, with Stuart McColm and under-19 player Fraser McGhee replacing Giuseppe Capuano and the ill Iain Gray.

The Bully Wee started strongly and played the match at a good tempo, putting the visitors under pressure from the first whistle.

Clyde had two goals disallowed in the first half. The first was a Michael Daly header where the striker was adjudged to have been offside and a Brian McQueen effort was also ruled out when the big defender was penalised for fouling an Elgin defender as he headed the ball into the net.

Clyde were not to be denied though. Daly rose above the Elgin defence and headed a Janczyk corner into the net to make the breakthrough in the 33rd minute and a deserved half-time lead.

During the opening period, John Sweeney and Stefan McCluskey had missed decent chances and concern spread that the team would pay the price as Elgin responded strongly at the beginning of the second half. However, Clyde regained the ascendency when a McColm cross wasn’t collected cleanly by Jellema and Ferguson calmly fired the ball into the roof of the net.

Elgin continued to work hard and Jamie Barclay had two great saves in quick succession as he denied Craig Gunn with his legs and then tipped a close range header over the bar.

The Bully Wee weathered the storm and gave the home crowd a resounding finish. First, Michael Daly dived to head home a Janczyk free kick in the 80th minute and, in the final minute, the victory was sealed with a goal of the highest quality. A free flowing passing move was completed with an excellent MacDonald cross that gave debutant Young his first senior goal with his first touch of the ball as he scored from close range.
