Recap

Given the sentiments expressed by players and management this was not the result or performance we expected following on from last weeks debacle. Again Clyde stumbled upon a tight formation and simply don’t look like they have more than one goal in them at the moment. Cranmer returned to the left of defence allowing Kernaghan to cover for the suspended Smith. Carrigan kept his place and Hinds was dropped to the bench. There was a gale blowing down the length of the pitch so silky football was never going to be on offer.

Keogh glanced a header over within minutes as Clyde tried to utilise playing with the wind. A real test of character came for Halliwell when a cut back was blasted across goal and he did well to smother. Again Clyde were almost exclusively builing down the right and Hagen and Mclaughlin were hardly seeing the ball. Keogh took the hint that the wind would help and let fly from long range effort only to see his shot come off the face of the bar. Apart from that neither keeper was having much to do but Nacho Novo posted his intent by beating Mensing and Kernaghan inside the box and pulling his shot just wide. Then Raith made the breakthrough. A break and long diagonal cross left Andy Smith sliding in to slot home the opening goal. Minutes later Halliwell pulled off a dramatic save as the Raith left back, Queseda, saw his header tipped over the bar. Clyde had little cutting edge although they did have a good shout for a penalty when Keogh tried to flick the ball past a defender but the referee ruled the arm contact unintentional. Otherwise the experienced Shaun Dennis was having a fine game deputising for the linesman and giving calling the offisdes.

Surely Clyde would get a rocket at half time and come out with all guns blazing? Well, sadly not. Instead we were treated to the farce of Clyde trying to play offside just inside their own half against the pace and skill of Novo. First Novo was put clean through but Halliwell saved the day again. Then Smith was put through and Halliwell again blocked. Clyde had zero movement up front and those trying to make the play had little option but to go for the lofted ball and hope for the best. Carrigan had came back to try and start a move but with nobody to pass to he cut infield only to lose the ball. A quick pass sent Smith clear again and this time he made no mistake burying the ball past Halliwell and it looked like game over. A Carrigan cross/shot came off the post but Clyde were struggling to make any impact. De Gregorio came on to try and spice things up and then Hinds soon followed. As is often the case Hinds scored with his first touch. A simple ball down the middle wasn’t dealt with by Rovers and Hinds poked the ball past the keeper from the edge of the box. Clyde had 15 minutes to pull this one out of the fire but couldn’t find the passion or the poise to make it happen.

Following hard on the heels of last week this was a very depressing affair. The last time Clyde scored more than 1 goal was over 2 months ago and that is now 3 home defeats on the spin. All this just as the squad is getting back to full strength too. Clyde’s offside tactic was suicide as they don’t have the pace to recover. In fact the team lacks pace all over. Given other results Clyde are well and truely back in the relegation mixer. Maybe we’ll start getting the points away from home when the team can sit in and the lack of pace isn’t exposed? Raith were probably due a result against us but they were bottom of the league and without an away win. Why us? Suddenly the Arbroath game looks even more crucial.
