The Bully Wee got their Ladbrokes League 2 campaign off to a winning start with a 2-0 win over Cowdenbeath at Broadwood this afternoon.

Danny Lennon made four changes to his side, with Blair Currie, Mark Lamont, Ally Love and Jordan Stewart all returning to the starting line-up.

Clyde started the game brightly and early chances fell to Ally Love and Chris McStay in quick succession, but Cowdenbeath defenders put their bodies on the line to block the attempts.

David Goodwillie then forced David McGurn into a save, when his powerful effort from distance was tipped over the bar by the Cowden ‘keeper.

The breakthrough was made after 25 minutes when Jordan Stewart’s floated free-kick into the box was met by Martin McNiff. The centre-half headed the ball past the advancing McGurn and into the net, to claim his third goal of the season.

Three minutes later The Bully Wee were given a chance to double their advantage when Chris McStay was pulled back in the box by ex-Clyde man David Marsh, whilst attempting to get a shot away. Goodwillie took the resulting penalty kick and sent McGurn the wrong way to put Clyde two goals up.

Goodwillie came close to adding more goals either side of the interval, but both efforts went narrowly wide.

Blair Currie had been a virtual spectator for most of the game but was called into action when he made a superb save following Jordyn Sheerin’s turn and shot from the edge of the area.

The Clyde ‘keeper made another good reflex stop moments later, tipping Robbie Buchanan’s shot behind for a corner.

Goodwillie had a chance to seal the game and his low trickling shot beat McGurn, but clipped the bottom of post and went behind.

In stoppage time Stewart almost added a third with a curling free-kick, but McGurn got his fingertips on it to push over the bar.
