Recap

With games running out and the gap to Arbroath growing, wins are crucial for the Bully Wee. Unfortunately, for the second time in four days, Clyde threw away a lead and ended up being well beaten by a promotion chasing side.

The Bully Wee recalled John Stewart and Willie Sawyers to their starting line-up and Sawyers was involved in a dramatic start to the game as his flick-on found Jordan White, who fired Clyde into a lead within the first minute of the game.

A defensive midfield selection for Clyde gave Cowdenbeath the impetus throughout the first half and Paul McQuade came close with a header. The Blue Brazil did manage to level before the break with a truly bizarre goal. Willie McLachlan, with no player near him, caught a loose ball thinking that the linesman had signalled for offside. From the resulting free-kick, White’s sliced clearance fell for McQuade to poke the ball past Callum Reidford who will feel he could have done better. Ally Park then saw a low shot well saved by David Hay with Clyde’s only other effort of the half.

The second half saw Clyde have a lot of possession but not many chances, with the introduction of Aleks Gramovics at least allowing the Bully Wee to push forward into the opposition’s half. A succession of corners and long throw-ins bombarded the penalty area but some good defending kept Clyde at bay. Despite this pressure, it was the home team that took the lead with their first attack of the half. McQuade did well to beat the offside trap and after Reidford spilled his low cross, Jon Robertson tapped home.

Clyde tried to respond but a good move saw Cowdenbeath tie up their win as Mark Ramsey crossed for McQuade to head home at the back post. Things could have ended up even worse as Jay Stein thumped the crossbar with a long range shot. The ineffective Stewart was substituted and his replacement, Dmitrijs Borisovs, linked play up well and he came close with a neat turn and shot.

Clyde certainly can’t claim that they haven’t had the opportunities to get out of the current predicament but with every passing game relegation looks like a certainty. The problems in finding a dominant midfield have not been resolved and this has been exposed in nearly every game.
