Recap
Clyde took another step towards promotion play-off qualification at Meadowbank this afternoon, with a workmanlike performance enough to see them past a relegation play-off-bound Edinburgh City.
Darren Young named an unchanged starting eleven following last week’s victory over Stirling Albion, whilst there was a welcome return to the matchday squad for Liam Scullion following the winger’s lengthy rehabilitation from a hip operation.
The Bully Wee came flying out the traps, breaking the deadlock before the five-minute mark. Scott Williamson bustled his way into the home third and fed Marley Redfern out wide, and the latter’s low ball into the middle of the box was coolly swept home by Barry Cuddihy.
The lead was almost doubled five minutes later when home ‘keeper Mark Weir spilled a cross to the feet of Williamson, but the experienced number one reacted well to tip the striker’s effort wide of his left post.
Clyde struggled to create anything further before half time, with the physicality of young striker Divine Iserhienrhien causing problems for the hosts. It was he who had The Citizens’ best opportunity to draw level, but his header from a wicked free-kick delivery drifted wide.
The teams exchanged warning shots early in the second half as Redfern’s cute near-post flick kissed the base of Weir’s upright, before a dipping Dylan Williams free-kick landed on the roof of the net up the other end.
On the hour mark, an Edinburgh defender took a swipe at the ball in an attempt to clear but caught Logan Dunachie, with referee Euan Birch pointing to the spot. Scott Williamson duly stepped up after an injury delay and emphatically converted the penalty into Weir’s bottom right corner to put the result beyond doubt.
City should’ve pulled one back late on with Guthrie spurning a gifted chance, Williams striking the top of the bar with a first-time effort and Iserhienrhien lifting the ball over Jay Hogarth but wide of goal, but there were to be no more goals in the time that remained.
