Recap
The Bully Wee entertained Montrose for the fourth time in four seasons and looked to continue the 100% record.
Straight away the home team were frustrated by their opponents negative approach, but with Hunter and Bradley in their starting line up, the fans knew that it wouldn’t be quite Clyde without the possibility of an upset being very real.
Clyde struggled early on having the lion’s share of possession, but with Montrose sitting so deep, the likes of Emslie and McLaren struggled to play the killer pass so effective the two previous weeks.
It was Div McKay who would look the liveliest, using his pace to good effect at times, but without any real support down the flanks.
The winger took matters in his own hands, when he turned his marker on the halfway line before racing through the inside right channel. McKay had only scored one goal for Clyde prior to this, but the way he drilled home from an acute angle, hopefully suggests more will come.
Half-time came, and the fans were relatively happy, as the team had not been threatened, but surely Montrose would come out fighting as it was a cup tie and they had nothing to lose.
The second half would turn out to be more frustrating as Clyde finally managed to get into some very good positions as their lower league opponents started to tire, but too often the wrong option was selected and good opportunities were lost.
In fact it would take until three minutes from time, to make sure the tie would be safe. After some very decent link up play between McKay and the excellent substitute McSwegan, McKay went down in the box after knocking the ball past Montrose ‘keeper Kelly. The award of the penalty appeared soft, but there was no complaint from any of the Montrose team. Clarke continued his fine scoring form to seal the tie.
