Recap
Clyde started the new year as they finished the last, with Darren Young’s men picking up another draw at home to Forfar Athletic this afternoon on a freezing cold day in Hamilton.
Young made one change to the team which faced East Kilbride last week, with Sam Campbell replacing the suspended Logan Dunachie.
The Bully Wee controlled much of the first half, carving out a number of opportunities within the opening quarter of an hour. The best of them came after the busy Taylor Sutherland bustled his way past a pair of Forfar defenders, but his eventual shot could only find Marc McCallum’s side netting.
Clyde continued to push for a breakthrough and applied pressure through a series of long throws, most of which were repelled by the visiting defence. On the one occasion the ball did drop to a white jersey, McCallum produced a fine save to tip Marley Redfern’s looping header over his crossbar.
The Loons had barely had a shot in anger in the opening half hour, but a gift from the home defence soon gave them the lead. Miscommunication beset the Clyde rearguard as the ball bounced in their area, with Scott Shepherd stealing in and squaring for Jake Sutherland who had the simple task of slotting home from close range.
The goal lifted Forfar and the balance of play levelled out across the remainder of the half, but the hosts did have a decent chance to draw level when Craig Howie’s header from a corner hit the crossbar.
The second half remained closely contested, with the teams exchanging blows – at times literally, resulting in a smattering of yellow cards. Kyle Connell was mere inches from prodding home a deep cross and, moments later, Campbell produced a desperate goal-line clearance to keep the deficit to one.
Scott Williamson’s introduction on the hour offered Clyde a bit of momentum, and a deserved equaliser arrived minutes later. James Hilton’s long ball down the channel to Taylor Sutherland was a good one, but the forward still had it all to do; after cutting inside and slaloming past a series of visiting defenders, acres of space opened up for him. He strode into it and duly slotted past McCallum, scoring his fifth goal of the campaign and cancelling out his brother’s opener.
Within ten minutes of finding that leveller, The Bully Wee suffered another self-inflicted blow. A pair of unnecessary fouls from Tommy Robson both yielded bookings, meaning his team had to play the final fifteen minutes with ten men.
To Clyde’s credit, they continued to search for a winner in the time that remained. Forfar took control of possession and had good chances of their own to snatch a winner, but Martin Rennie’s free header went narrowly wide before Howie made a fine block to deny Angus Mailer. At the other end, Sena, Sutherland and Williamson all tried to beat experienced stopper McCallum, but none of the trio could find the top corner as the spoils were shared.
