Forfar Athletic v Clyde

Clyde were able to record their first William Hill League 2 away win of the season this afternoon against Forfar Athletic, with Craig Howie’s looping header being the ultimate difference between the two sides.

The Clyde line-up saw three changes from last weeks loss to Spartans, with Robbie Hemfrey returning from illness and Darren Hynes and Robbie Leitch entering the starting XI. They replaced Barry Cuddihy, who missed through injury, with Jay Kennedy and Taylor Sutherland dropping to the bench.

Clyde started the match well, as minutes after kick-off, a smart headed-flick from Rennie allowed Williamson to lay up Leitch, but the shot took a deflection and lost its power.

A number of Forfar free kicks peppered the Clyde box but were well marshalled. A low ball into the box did fall to the feet of Forfar forward but was badly mis-hit and went out for a goal-kick.

Forfar would go on to hit the woodwork near the 35th minute, after an audacious volley from 25 yards out skimmed over the top of the bar.

Ray Grant was close to catching the Marc McCallum out with a clever free kick, and did well to create another chance moments after, but the Forfar defence were able to eventually clear the danger.

Seven minutes following the restart, Andy Murdoch was fouled 25 yards out following a smart bit of dribbling. Ray Grant delivered a great ball into the Forfar box, and following a giant leap, Craig Howie was able to loop the ball over McCallum and out Clyde a goal up.

Williamson, who was a nuisance to the Forfar backline throughout the game, came close to creating Clyde’s second. Making a run in behind, he attempted to cross the ball to an onrushing Martin Rennie but it was cleared for a corner just before Rennie made contact.

The final ten minutes of the game saw Clyde absorb a lot of Forfar pressure. A number of corners were put into the box but Howie and Dunachie were able to head away any danger.

Following a quickly taken corner, Russell McLean found the ball drop to his feet and lashed the ball goalward from 5 yards out. Amazingly, Darren Hynes was able to make a great block and prevent what looked like a certain equaliser.

Ultimately, the Clyde backline were able to defend the lead until the final whistle, ensuring The Bully Wee picked up their first away win of the season.
