Recap

2016 ended on a low note for The Bully Wee today, as defensive lapses allowed Annan to leave Broadwood with a Ladbrokes League 2 victory.

Following last week’s defeat at Forfar, Barry Ferguson made two changes to the team, with Darren Miller and Michael Oliver coming in for Chris Smith and Martin McNiff.

Clyde were well on top at the start of the match and a series of corners everntually led to Ross Perry’s header being cleared off the line.

However, after 12 minutes, a much deserved opening goal arrived when Phil Johnston’s long pass was helped on by David Gormley and Peter MacDonald finished well from inside the box.

Annan’s only real chance of the first half came when John Gibson let a long range shot slip through his hands, before Gormley had a great chance to give Clyde some breathing space when he was put through on goal but his attempt to fool the ‘keeper with a chip shot went wrong.

Early in the second half, The Galabankies got on level terms when a high ball into the box evaded the Clyde defence and Gibson was caught out of position, allowing David McKenna to loop a header into the net.

It soon got worse for The Bully Wee as a low shot from a free-kick by Rabin Omar was spilled by Gibson and McKenna was in the right place to knock the ball in again, to give Annan the lead.

As Clyde found it difficult to get back into the match, a good move on the right wing between substitute Scott Ferguson and Gormley led to the former going down in the box. Referee Scott Millar awarded a penalty and MacDonald made no mistake from the spot, to make it 2-2.

With The Bully Wee looking the likelier team to go on and win the match from there, MacDonald continued to be involved as he just failed to make full connection with a header and then had a strong claim for another penalty waved away by the ref.

After 88 minutes though, a serious of mistakes between the Clyde midfield and defence eventually handed an open goal to Aidan Smith, who rolled the ball home to claim a win for his team.
