Clyde Powerchair Presentation Day

This year’s Clyde Powerchair FC presentation event was held on Sunday 24th June. As is now traditional, the first part of the event was the Clyde Powerchair Cup competition, held this year at Clyde Valley High School in Wishaw.

As normal, the Clyde players were joined by friends from Glasgow Gladiators Powerchair FC and this year everyone was delighted that Clyde manager, Danny Lennon, was also able to attend.

For the Cup, teams were organised into two groups with the top two qualifying for the semi-finals. Powerchair teams normally consist of four players, but to make this competition more open, it was played with three players per team. It seemed to work and there were some very high scoring matches, with goal difference having to be used in deciding who qualified. However, the competition was eventually won by the imaginatively named Team 2 and the winning players were delighted with their medals and didn’t seem to mind that the actual Cup was missing!

After presenting the winning team with their medals, Danny was then persuaded to be goalkeeper in a penalty shoot-out.

Everyone then made their way to Pather Community Centre in Wishaw for the Awards Presentation where, as is customary, they were initially faced with the challenge of trying to finish the fantastic buffet laid on by the Clyde Powerchair family.

Danny kindly agreed to present the awards; with Clyde Alba Players’ Player of the Year and Goal of the Season going to Kieron Burns and Lewis McConnell respectively and the equivalent awards for Clyde Caledonia going to Kevin Kennedy and Lizzie Jackson.

The disco part of the day was its usual rumbustious success and the highlight was the playing of the song ‘Human’ by the group The Killers, which had been a favourite of some of the players who are no longer with us.

The whole event was a tremendous success. The Clyde Powerchair team would to thank all those who made it happen, with a special thanks to Danny Lennon for immersing himself in the whole day and still being there when he should have been at a family lunch.

The team is already looking forward to the start of the new season, which kicks-off on 2nd September in Dundee with the League Cup competition.
