Recap

Clyde managed to pick up their first three points of the season on Saturday, courtesy of a three goal victory over Ross County.

Clyde saw the return of much missed defender, Craig McKeown, to the line-up, with Michael McGowan and Peter Cherrie also returning, after being rested in the midweek win over Ayr United.

Clyde traditionally have a good record against County but it was the opponents who started strongest, with on-loan Celt Gary Irvine seeing his close range drive well stopped by Cherrie. McKeown showed his worth to the side by completing the clearance. Within another two minutes, the lively Amik Ciani attempted an acrobatic over-head kick, which looped just past the post.

With this early spell of pressure over, Clyde’s midfield started to take a grasp on the game and Stephen O’Donnell fired in several attempts on goal, none of which troubled ‘keeper Craig Samson. Samson was causing problems with several bizarre moments, one of which saw a poor kickout find Eddie Malone wide on the left but he failed to get his lob to dip under the bar.

Samson then comfortably held a Malone free kick, which just eluded Neil McGregor’s head. The goalkeeper then denied his ex-Killie team-mate McGregor again, with an instinctive save from his close range scissor kick.

County were fielding ex-Clyde player Alex Williams and his one opportunity of a quiet match fell to him just before the break. A ricochet saw his briefly through on goal but as Clyde players closed in, he cracked in a shot from 25 yards that Cherrie saved well.

The final chance of the half came from a Ross County corner, however it resulted in Clyde’s best effort of the match. A lightening break saw Dougie Imrie play in Paul McHale and after the Clyde skipper slid past three County challenges, he saw his low effort strike the post.

At the break, most Clyde fans were wondering if missed chances would haunt the Bully Wee but the players set-out to prove otherwise. Within three minutes, Clyde had taken the lead. Imrie’s deep cross was cleared as far as O’Donnell who saw his volley strike a County player on the arm. The referee didn’t seem like he would give the penalty, however another County player then misjudged the ball’s flight and clearly controlled the ball with his arm. After O’Donnell’s midweek penalty miss, McHale to the responsibility of the kick and slotted the ball home to give Clyde a deserved lead.

County then introduced a new strike partnership of Sean Higgins and Martin Scott and it was Scott who almost levelled things in the 58th minute. The ball was played down County’s left wing and Eddie Malone seemed to think the ball had cross the touchline. His hesitation gave County a chance to swing in a cross and Michael Gardyne saw his close range effort blocked by his own player. Stuart Anderson then fired in a shot that Cherrie superbly stopped, only for Scott to fire the rebound over the bar from 6 yards. An awful miss and despite Clyde’s domination, the scoreline could have been level. Clyde then killed off their visitors with a quality second goal. A long ball from defence was pulled down by the otherwise quiet Andy Ferguson and the young striker unleashed a thunderbolt from 25 yards which crashed high into the net past the helpless ‘keeper.

With the game all but finished, Clyde chose to introduce Roddy Hunter, the striker replacing Ferguson. He instantly impressed with a good first touch and passing and it was from his probing that Clyde added a third. Clyde were producing some outstanding passing football and Hunter released Malone, who won a corner from Andy Dowie. O’Donnell’s looping delivery landed in a crowd of bodies and ended up in the back of the net. From the celebrations it was clear that Imrie had got the final touch, a reward for another energetic display.

Most managers will tell you that results are everything in football and in that respect, it was a superb day for Clyde, earning their first win of the season. However, it was the manner of the display – packed with flowing football and quality defending – that pleased most of the home support. Cherrie was flawless in goals and has undoubtedly improved since last season. McGregor looked much more comfortable as a sweeper and both Higgins and McKeown were as solid as ever on either side of him. The midfield completely dominated County’s and the front line was full of running and movement. With winnable games coming up, hopefully this sort of performance will be carried into future matches.
