Recap
Clyde earned a deserved 3 points from a stuffy Ross County at Broadwood yesterday. With the visitors coming off a resounding derby win over Inverness in midweek many must have expected better from the Highlanders. However it proved a difficult task for Clyde to break down a stubborn defence but in the end a headed goal by Stevie Convery proved to be enough to secure another vital home win.
After the disappointing display midweek against Queen of the South, Alan Kernaghan rang the changes with Halliwell, Potter and Fraser replacing Morrison, Mensing and surprisingly Cosgrove. And the game started very poorly with most activity in midfield and Clyde coming up against a seven man defence. Paul Shields was doing his best to get in behind the County defence and firstly tried a long range free kick which came to nothing and a minute later he his shot was saved by Bullock in the County goal. Bullock seems to save his best performances for Clyde and easily dealt with what was thrown at him yesterday. However with half time approaching Mark McLaughlin broke down the left and sent over a superb cross which Jack Ross nodded back across goal for Convery to nod home. It was really the only cheer in an extremely dull first half. However with Alex Smith the opposition manager we really should have expected little else in all honesty.
The second half gave more to cheer as County opened up a little in search of an equaliser. But they threatened very little and Clyde looked the more likely to add to the lead. Efforts from Kane and Potter were easily dealt with by Bullock and when John Fraser burst into the box his efforts were desperately cleared by County defenders.
But when the final whistle blew the biggest cheer came when the result came through from Palmerston, with the news that Falkirk had lost again making Tuesday’s visit to Falkirk all the more vital.
Hopefully the Clyde faithful will be treated to a better game than yesterdays turned out to be. However few will complain if we can come away with a victory against the side who already think they have won the league.
STAR RATINGS (*****)
Halliwell (**) Did nothing wrong, but didn’t have the chance to do anything right.
Potter (***) Usual solid defending but distribution needs worked on..
Kernaghan (***) Again, not his best performance but still led by example.
McLaughlin (****) Seemed to be enjoying himself and again got gradually better.
Ross (***) Great header to setup goal.
Kane (***) Much better use of the ball, although still struggled to get pace of game.
Millen (**) Too many poor passes and wasted attacks.
Fraser (***) Did well considering heavily strapped knee, clearly missed previously.
Hagen (***) Provided good width once again and had one or two good runs..
Convery (***) Took his goal well but unusually ineffective otherwise.
Shields (***) Looked good on the ball and provides a different style of Clyde attack.
REACTION
Stevie Convery – "It was a good win for us,
Alan Kernaghan – "3 points is about all you can say about the game. It wasn’t silky soccer by any stretch of the imagination but it was effective, and the three points are vital considering what’s happened elsewhere. They went 4 up front near the end but we were able to counter it and should have done better with our chances. We didn’t really look in any bother at the back though. Billy Reid has said that that was our most important result of the season. It’s been a good week really in terms of results."
