Recap
Clyde’s good run of form came to an end at Broadwood this evening, as The Shire grabbed an early goal and successfully frustrated The Bully Wee for the remainder of the match.
Barry Ferguson made three changes to the team that won at Arbroath on Saturday, with Ross Millen, JP McGovern and Paul Slane all coming in. David Gormley was suspended, with John Gemmell and Mark McLaughlin also ruled out by injury.
The match got off to the worst possible start for Clyde as the visitors took the lead after just 90 seconds. Thomas Orr’s cross from the right was met by the sliding David McKenna and he turned the ball into the net from close range.
Scott Linton was first to try to level the scores with a low shot that just missed the target, before Scott McLaughlin’s deflected effort was well saved by Richie Barnard.
At the other end, Marc Waters did well to tip over a curling shot by Neil McCabe, as the visitors continued to offer a threat on the break.
The Shire featured former Clyde man John Fraser as a trialist in midfield and, after he conceded a foul at the edge of the box, Sean Higgins tested Barnard from the free-kick.
Just before half-time, David Marsh ran onto a low pass just outside the area, but his shot hit the outside of the post.
Early in the second half, East Stirling could have added another goal but Michael McMullin chose to go for a volley instead of an easier looking header and failed to hit the target.
Soon after that, there was an agonising scramble in the visiting penalty box, but no Clyde player could convert the ball into the net.
With around 20 minutes left on the clock, a Michael Bolochoweckyj shot led to a corner and that in turn led to another dramatic melee in front of the East Stirling goal, with the final attempt from Higgins just missing the top corner of the goal.
As time ran out, Marvin Andrews was sent into the action as a makeshift target man, but his presence couldn’t bring a clear-cut chance and The Bully Wee were left to rue a missed opportunity in the Ladbrokes League 2 promotion race.
