Queen of the South 3-0 Clyde
Queen of the South’s Stephen Dobbie scored a second-half hat-trick in the Betfred Cup this evening as The Bully Wee went down 3-0 at Palmerston Park.
Danny Lennon shuffled his pack from Saturday’s season opener against Edinburgh City, bringing Kieran Duffie, Dylan Cogill, Kevin Nicoll, Eddie Ferns and Ally Love into the starting line-up.
Blair Currie was called into early action when he made a good save from a Dobbie effort, after a slick passing move from the home side.
Clyde created a chance of their own when a low cross into the box from Eddie Ferns crept through to Ally Love, but the winger’s snap shot across the goal came off the post
The hosts also hit the woodwork following a corner prior to half-time, with the ball clipping the crossbar, before being cleared to safety.
The Doonhamers came out all guns blazing after the interval, and within 30 seconds Dobbie was bearing down on goal. The striker lobbed Currie, but his effort came off the post and bounced back into the Clyde ‘keepers hands.
Less than a minute later a header from Dobbie hit the other post, but on this occasion the ball bounced favourably and went over the line, despite Currie’s best efforts to keep it out.
Shortly after Dobbie claimed his second goal of the evening when he got in behind the Clyde defence and made no mistake with his finish.
Currie showed good reflexes again, saving a powerful shot from Lyndon Dykes, then tipping a long range free-kick from Gary Harkins over the bar.
The Bully Wee almost clawed a goal back when Jack Boyle played in David Goodwillie, but just as he was about to pull the trigger Michael Doyle made a crucial challenge to turn the ball behind for a corner.
It was Dobbie who had the final say, when he intercepted a slack pass from Jordan Stewart and drove towards goal, before calmly slotting past Currie to bag his hat-trick.
