Three goals by Montrose in a first half sixteen minute spell condemned The Bully Wee to a 3-2 defeat in the Ladbrokes League 2 this afternoon.
There was one change to the Clyde starting line-up, with last weekend’s goalscorer Smart Osadolor replacing the suspended Jack Breslin.
Clyde got off to a great start after four minutes. Max Wright took advantage of a break of the ball in midfield to play in Osadolor and the striker slotted the ball past the home ‘keeper.
However, Montrose then went on to take charge of the match, starting with a penalty kick award following a handball by Kevin Nicoll. Iain Campbell scored from the spot.
The home side used that as a catalyst to dominate proceedings and were rewarded with two more goals – both contributed to by some sloppy Clyde defending. Chris Templeman made it 2-1 from close range and Graham Webster got the third, with a shot that went in after hitting both posts.
Osadolor had a half chance to get a goal back just before the break, but in truth the scoreline could have been more favourable to Montrose.
In the second half, there was a steady improvement from The Bully Wee and, on the hour mark, Barry Cuddihy saw his shot cleared off the line after Allan Fleming made a save.
Kieran Duffie then forced Fleming into a block with a low drive.
On 74 minutes the pressure eventually paid off as David Goodwillie scored, after substitute Callum Home and Cuddihy combined to force Fleming into action again, with Clyde’s top scorer converting the rebound.
The closing period of the match saw Clyde push hard for an equaliser, but Martin McNiff’s low shot went wide in what turned out to be the best chance before the final whistle.
