Sweeney Becomes Latest Signing

John Sweeney became the latest player to join Stuart Millar’s squad this evening, when he agreed terms to sign for the Bully Wee from Pollok.

Clyde’s head coach commented, “I’m delighted that John has agreed to join us, as a number of top Junior clubs were looking at him. He is an energetic player who can play across the midfield and will provide a greater physical presence to complement people like Cochrane and Stevenson.”

The 22-year-old is pictured on the homepage at Broadwood tonight with Stuart and fellow recent signing, JC Hutchison.

He is also pictured above (left) showing off the club’s new home kit, made by Joma Sports and sponsored by CLC Presentation Systems. On the right is Haydn Cochrane wearing the away strip, sponsored by www.clyde-exiles.com.

Sweeney was clearly delighted to be Clyde’s newest player when he spoke to the official website, starting with how the move came about:-

“When I heard that Rab (Sneddon) had taken a job at Clyde I thought there was maybe a chance he’d give me a shout, as I knew he liked me as a player. I wasn’t sure though, as Stuart could have had his own ideas about who he wanted in midfield.

“Pollok wanted me to stay but I got a phonecall from Rab saying Clyde were interested. Once the Junior season was over Stuart phoned to invite me in for talks today and I couldn’t wait for it to come, I was dying to come in.

“As soon as Neil Watt said he wanted me to sign there was no hesitation, I signed it there and then.

“Everyone that I know that has played at senior level said to me that there was no way I could knock back this chance.”

John confirmed that he was at home in the middle of the park…

“I prefer to play as a central midfielder but I can play on either side as well. I managed to score ten goals for Pollok last season but it wasn’t enough, I wanted more. We didn’t have a great season overall though.

“I can’t wait for pre-season now and I wish it was sooner. It’s a huge contrast to be looking forward to playing an Everton side as opposed to a Junior match and I’m really excited about it.”
