Airdrie United 1 Clyde 3

It was billed as the match we couldn’t afford to lose and the players delivered the three points with an excellent display. Clyde had a dream start when an Alex Williams free kick was deflected into the net in the opening minutes.

Clyde boss Graham Roberts has often commented on the importance of getting the first goal and so it proved today as from then on Airdrie were chasing the game. In truth Airdrie United deserved more from the first half but some weak finishing and a promising display by Clyde keeper Paul Jarvie, which included three excellent stops resulted in the Diamonds trailing at half time.

The second half was a different story as Clyde’s counter attacking display secured the points. A terrific solo effort by Tom Brighton gave Clyde a two goal advantage, before a superb Williams’ volley from close range seem to have sealed the points for the Bully Wee.

Airdrie rallied and were rewarded with a penalty from Stephen McKeown but just as Airdrie fans expected their favourites to make life uncomfortable for the visitors, Clyde responded again by dominating possession and running out comfortable winners.

It was a good team performance by Clyde today and one enjoyed greatly by the travelling support.
