Bon Voyage!

Former Clyde and Scotland boss John Prentice is heading back to his adopted home for the past twenty-five years when he flies out to Australia on Thursday. Before he does, he wishes to pass on his thanks for the warm welcome and kind words he received from Clyde fans during his recent visit to Broadwood to watch the Bully Wee’s win over Raith Rovers.

John managed Clyde for four seasons from November 1962 until the Spring of 1966. In his first half-season he was unable to stop Clyde being relegated but 1963-63 saw them win promotion, as runners-up to Hal Stewart’s all-conquering Morton side.

Back in the First Division it was Clyde who fared the better of the two promoted sides, with John Prentice’s boys finishing seventh in the eighteen-team league, and playing a much-admired brand of football into the bargain. It was more of the same during 1965-66 until the Manager’s tremendous achievements were recognised and he was invited to take over the Scotland job.

The following season, under Davie White, Clyde finished as the third best team in Scotalnd but few were in any doubt that it was John Prentice who had laid the foundations for Clyde’s best-ever leage campaign.

At Broadwood John was also accompanied by his wife Shelia and his son Alan who himself enjoyed a warm welcome from Clyde fans in stark contrast to the days when he played for Meadowbank Thistle under Terry Christie!
