Darren Sheridan Signs For Clyde

Experienced midfielder Darren Sheridan today signed for Clyde. “Darren’s experience will be invaluable to us in the coming season,” commented Manager Billy Reid after today’s signing.

The thirty-six year old Mancunian began his footballing career at Leeds United as an apprentice, but was released and quit playing football for a time.

His career resumed in 1987- 88 when he played six times at English non-League level for Mossley and also turned out for Curzon Ashton. During this period Darren took on a number of different jobs, including postman, baker and laying tarmac. In the summer of 1992 he signed up for Winsford United to play semi-professional football. His arrival coincided with a tremendously successful season for Winsford, who won an impressive five trophies.

Winsford’s success brought Darren back into the limelight and at the age of twenty-five he joined Barnsley on 12 August 1993.

In his first season at Oakwell he played just three games but in 1994-95 he was much more prominent, playing thirty-five League games, scoring twice. Established as a regular, he played forty-one times during 1995-96.

During the 1996-97, Darren played forty-one times, scoring twice as Barnsley stormed to Premier League promotion. In England’s top League he made twenty-six appearances and a season’s highlight was Barnsley’s 3-2 FA Cup home win over Manchester United.

1998- 99 saw Barnsley back in the First Division, where Darren played thirty-two times in both the league and cup. In the summer of 1999 Darren ended six years at Barnsley when he joined Wigan Athletic on a free transfer, re-joining John Benson, who had originally taken him to Barnsley.

Another forty-plus games were added to his total during 1999-2000 including a Wembley ply-off appearance which Wigan lost 3-2 to Gillingham.

During the 2000-01 season Darren played around thirty games for the Latics but was released by manager Steve Bruce as part of a cost-cutting exercise.

Oldham Athletic manager Andy Ritchie stepped in, signing up Darren on a free transfer in July 2001, and teaming up Darren with his brother John for the first time in professional football.

During the next three seasons Darren played in one hundred and one competitive games for the Oldham Latics before being freed in the summer of 2004, leading his recent appearances as a trialist with Clyde.
