MATCH ACTION

2 mins: An Andy Kane cross from the left was headed powerfully down towards goal by Willie Falconer, but straight at the ‘keeper.
5 mins: Andy McClay collected a weak Convery shot in the box, but his shot was poor and saved.
23 mins: A low 25 yard shot by a Stranraer midfielder was well held by Asin.
25 mins: Dunn won the ball in the middle of the park and plays it to Falconer, who chips the ball up and hits a good 30 yard shot that flies over.
28 mins: Simon Mensing brings the ball forward, gives it to Convery out wide right, he beats a man and puts a low cross over, but it was held by the goalkeeper.
33 mins: A dangerous cross from the right floats towards Clyde’s far post but there are no takers for Stranraer.
35 mins: A chipped shot from wide left by a Stranraer forward flies harmlessly over.
37 mins: Falconer collects the ball and brings it towards the box, crosses to the far post but Dunn can’t quite get to it and the keeper smothers the ball.
39 mins: A pass is played to a Stranraer forward with his back to goal at the edge of the box, he flicks it into the box and the onrushing forward puts a low shot past Asin into the corner for 1-0 to Stranraer.
42 mins: Dunn collects a through ball but is dragged wide, his cross comes back to him but he can only hit a weak shot.

52 mins: Stranraer player collects the ball in the box but his shot is tame.
55 mins: Willie Falconer can’t get a deflected pass out from under his feet in the box, the ball breaks out to Mensing whose powerful shot is deflected wide for a Clyde corner. From the corner, a Falconer header is cleared off the line.
59 mins: Jack Ross bursts down the right wing and does well to get a low cross in. Andy Kane (surrounded by defenders) gathers the ball with his back to goal in the box, but he twists and turns and puts a fine shot into the top corner to make the score 1-1.
61 mins: Willie Falconer has a free header at the back post from a corner but he can only hit the side netting.
68 mins: Good play by Paul Kane and Millen in midfield and the ball eventually reaches Andy Kane on the edge of the box. He slips a good pass to Mensing but his shot from 5 yards was well blocked by their keeper.
75 mins: John Potter puts a cross in, and McLaughlin connects with his head at the back post but it is cleared away on the line.
79 mins: Hinds collects a throw in, and does well to get into the box but his shot from an angle is saved.

Overall: The match was always a bit flat and the slow surface didn’t help Clyde’s passing game. The first half was 50-50 with Clyde having some nice passing movements in midfield, but too often it broke up before reaching the final third. The second half was better for Clyde, and they always controlled the midfield. Enough chances were created to win the game, but they couldn’t be converted through bad luck more than anything else. A good work out though, and there were enough positive signs to suggest improvements are always being made. The passing certainly seems sharper than last season.

HOW DID THEY PLAY?

Asin: Like the Livingston game, it was hard to judge him fully as he had long periods out the game. He handled the few shots on target comfortably, and couldn’t really be do much for the goal. His kicking looked a bit poor though.
Mensing: Had more to do in an attacking sense than defensively, which he did well.
McLaughlin: Was never put under much pressure but seemed a wee bit quieter than usual. Can’t be faulted though.
Potter: Seemed to enjoy his role in the middle of defence and coped well.
Fraser: Was busy in midfield but a bit inconsistent with his passing sometimes.
McClay: Andy had some nice touches but still lacks a bit of fitness. Improving.
Convery: Tried hard to get into the game but didn’t that often, and looked nervous with some of his passing.
Dunn: Looks a lot more comfortable in the middle of the park but he didn’t play as well as he did against Norwich.
Falconer: Considering it was Willie’s first game for a while, he looked good and was always a threat in the air. One or two slack moments but they should go away. Seemed very fit.
A.Kane: Definitely improving with games, Andy was a nuisance and scored an excellent goal. Always willing to receive the ball.
Hagen : Struggled to make a huge impact on the match but stuck to his task well.
Millen: Did well when he came on and made a few good tackles.
P.Kane: Again, his experience showed and he made some good passes.
Ross: Was keen to get forward and caused problems down the right.
Smith: Was hardly in the game.
Hinds: Looked lively and sharp when he came on, and immediately caused the Stranraer defence problems.
Keogh: Was hardly in the game.

REACTION

Alan Kernaghan: The most important thing to take from that was fitness. I don’t think we played that well but to be fair to Stranraer I thought they played very well. The pitch was a bit slow and didn’t allow you to run with the ball. The second half was better for us, we looked a lot more threatening. But overall I’m disappointed. We have to find a happy medium between nice passing and something that is actually creating chances. I told the players that it is important we come to places like this, without belittling Stranraer, and play well – not just against teams like Norwich and Plymouth. I thought Andy Kane did well, especially in the second half when he had balls to run onto because I don’t think playing with his back to goal is Andy’s strength. I thought Jose did ok. His kicking worries me a bit, it’s an important skill to have in the Scottish game. We’ll have a think about him over the next day or two.

Andy Kane: It was a good work out, it’s important we get our fitness back. It’s not always the result you are looking for in these kind of games. It was good to score, it always is. I got a couple at Oban and one today, but I’ll need a few more to get a place in the starting line-up. I think Alan will start with Leigh Hinds and Pat Keogh up front, and rightly so they did very well last season. There’s myself, Leigh, Pat, Willie, Stevie and David Hagen who can all play up front so there’s good competition. It’s also important to get the partnership right.
