Recap
On this performance it appears that it doesn’t take much to knock Clyde out of their stride. This was like the early season Clyde that didn’t lack for effort but hadn’t the ideas or the pace to trouble a disciplined St Johnstone team. St Johnstone don’t concede many goals and we could see why – but the surprise was they bagged two and should have scored a couple more. What has happened to the drive and confidence that defeated Falkirk only a couple of weeks ago?
Potter was suspended and replaced by Bossy on the right of the defence and Millen returned to midfield. Clyde began brightly and Main in the Saints’ goal did well to hold onto a shot. However little did we know that was about all he had to do in the first half. Saints decided to play with two up front but kept over-hitting the ball when trying to use the pace of Hay and Lovenkrands. Then on 15 minutes Saints took the lead. With play heading towards Clyde’s right a quick reverse cross found Hay with time and space to loop a header over Halliwell. Clyde were struggling to make anything happen in front of goal as Saints pressed and crowded the midfield. Towards half time Clyde began to mount a bit more pressure but couldn’t find the final ball to really hurt the Saints’ defence. The first half ended with neither keeper having had much to do but St Johnstone had the lead and that was all that mattered.
Despite the flat performance Clyde didn’t make any changes at half time. Clyde began to press forward leaving themselves exposed to the pace of Lovenkrands. He seemed determined to get Clyde back into the game as on three occasions he was put clean through but failed to find the target. First he smacked the crossbar, then Halliwell pulled off a fine save and thirdly he delayed and delayed before scooping the ball over the bar. If he’d taken any of these chances would have been dead and buried. Nish’s lack of physical presence was showing up again and he was replaced by Falconer. Clyde toiled away until a piece of individual brilliance from Hinds brought Clyde back into the game. Collecting the ball on the left he headed towards heavy traffic and a cross or a pass looked likely. Instead he beat two or three players and rifled a low shot into the corner of the net. Suddenly Clyde were back in the game and the Saints’ defence began to look ruffled for the first time. The mood didn’t last long though as Lovenkrands scored the winner with 15 minutes to go. He latched onto a long ball and although Bossy appeared to have him covered in the corner he waltzed around him with ease. Making his way into the box nobody came to meet him and he fired the ball high into the net. The surprising thing was that after his
It’s odd to see a team that was brimming with confidence reduced to a shadow of its former self. The really frustrating thing is that we know they can play so much better. Arbroath will put ten men behind the ball next week and it will be interesting to see how Clyde go about getting in behind them.
