Recap
The Bully Wee had to settle for a point on their return to Ladbrokes League 1 this afternoon, in an entertaining and highly competitive contest against East Fife at Broadwood.
Ray Grant, David Goodwillie and Chris Johnston were all brought back into Danny Lennon’s starting XI, and recent loan signing Alex Petkov was also handed his Clyde debut in defence.
It took Clyde just ten minutes to open the scoring. Barry Cuddihy started a counter attack deep inside the Clyde half and released Chris Johnston, who drove down the right wing and whipped a cross into the box. Tony Wallace got on the end of it and his header was blocked by the arm of a visiting defender, prompting referee Barry Cook to point to the spot. David Goodwillie took the penalty and placed it to Jordan Hart’s left, scoring the first Ladbrokes League 1 goal of the season in the process.
The Fifers almost pulled one back moments later when a low cross into the box was met by Liam Watt, but David Mitchell showed superb reflexes to get down and make the save.
Scott Agnew also had a chance before the interval but his effort flashed across the face of goal, and Clyde went into half-time with a slender advantage.
East Fife had the better of the second half but it was Clyde who threatened first after Chris McStay played a ball through the visiting defence to Darren Smith. He showed good skill to beat Chris Higgins but was then unable to find a way past Hart from a narrow angle. Wallace then saw his header from the resultant corner go narrowly past the post.
Anton Dowds was brought off the bench at this moment and he got on the scoresheet three minutes later. The Methil side found themselves with a two-on-one advantage down Clyde’s left flank and a low cross into the box by Aaron Dunsmore was fired home by Dowds.
Both sides kept looking for a winner in the remaining half hour but were unable to seriously test Hart or Mitchell. The game became increasingly stretched and action flowed from end-to-end in the closing stages, as the clubs ultimately had to make do with a share of the spoils.
