Recap
The Bully Wee’s recent poor run of form at Broadwood continued today, as Dumbarton came away with all three points on a freezing afternoon in Cumbernauld.
Danny Lennon made one change to the side that picked up a point in Methil on Tuesday evening, with Chris Johnston replacing Tony Wallace.
Clyde broke the deadlock in the 7th minute after Chris McStay passed the ball to Chris Johnston, who jinked his way past a few Dumbarton defenders before hitting a shot from the edge of the area that beat Conor Brennan.
The Sons had a chance to equalise when Adam Frizzell got in behind the Clyde defence but his tame shot was held easily by David Mitchell.
It was all square ten minutes later. Michael McMullin made a good tackle inside the box but the visitors got a fortuitous break, as the ball ricocheted to Joe McKee. He placed a shot through the legs of Mitchell and into the back of the net.
Johnston was involved again when he floated a cross into the danger area. David Goodwillie showed good control to take the ball down on his chest but he delayed his shot and Brennan was able to block.
Dumbarton took the lead just three minutes after the restart. A low cross across the box found it’s way to the unmarked Isaac Layne at the back post, and he poked the ball across Mitchell to net the winner.
The Sons should have increased their lead after a quick counter attack. They found themselves with a 4-v-2 advantage, but Mitchell pulled off a superb save to deny Stefan McCluskey from close range.
The Bully Wee had plenty of possession in the closing stages as Dumbarton sat in to defend their lead, but there was little end product on display, with a number of crosses into the box being overhit or failing to find a Clyde man.
