The Bully Wee lost out to the league leaders at Recreation Park today, after a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful effort.
With goalkeeper David Crawford struggling with an injury, Nick Feely went straight into the starting line-up and he was joined by Jamie Pollock and Gavin Brown as Jim Duffy made some changes from the team that faced Elgin on Tuesday.
The opening stages of the match saw both teams trying to play some passing football on Alloa’s artificial surface, with little to choose between the sides. However, as the half progressed it was Clyde that became stronger, albeit with few clear-cut chances on goal to show for it.
Jason Marr did come close with a back post header, with the first half ending without Feely having to make any significant contribution.
The hosts looked visibly hungrier after the interval but the Clyde defence continued to be strong. At the other end, John Neill gave himself a glorious chance to score when he battled to get on the end of a Gavin Brown pass, but he seemed to get caught in two minds at the crucial moment and his shot went straight into the arms of Scott Bain.
The Wasps also had a fine chance, when substitute Graeme Holmes was given the ball inside the box following a neat move, but his shot ended up well off target.
As the match approached its final stages it felt as though a single goal would claim all three points and it was taken by Alloa on 76 minutes. The Bully Wee failed to take a chance to clear the ball from danger and a cross from the left wing was met by Darren Young, who knocked the ball past Feely from close range.
