Southside Community Gala Day

The weather may have been dull and overcast but it didn’t spoil the enjoyment at the Southside Community School of Football Gala Day at Broadwood on Sunday 29th April.

Clyde FC’s status as a community club was further enhanced when teams from the Southside School entertained opponents from one of Glasgow’s premier schools of football, the Scotland Boys’ Club.

The players, all aged between 7 and 11, had a day out they will never forget. The excited youngsters used the first team changing rooms, walked onto the pitch through the tunnel before lining up as their names were read out over the tannoy to the cheers of the support in the stands. Their names were even displayed on the scoreboard.

Assistant Manager, Chic Charnley and first team players Gavin Brown and Iain Gray were on hand to support proceedings. They all commented favourably on the standard of football demonstrated by the Bully Wee players and how that obviously reflected the quality of the coaching they receive.

After the matches, having graced the same pitch as stars such as Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Darren Fletcher, all players received a commemorative Clyde medal from Chic, Iain and Gavin, as well as a goodie bag.

Event organiser, Stevie Morton (Head Coach at the Southside School) said, “We are always trying to promote Clyde FC within our community and the fact that we attracted 120 youngsters and about 250 parents to this event, 20 miles from where most of them live and when the Old Firm game was live on TV, shows there is a demand for this type of community activity.

“We hope it will generate a ‘soft spot’ for The Bully Wee amongst the participants which in time will become full blooded support.

“I’d also like to thank all those who contributed to the day and made it a tremendous success.”
