George Clark
All at the club were saddened to learn of the recent passing of life-long supporter George Clark.
George was a quiet, unassuming gentleman, who followed Clyde all his life, which was largely due to his dad Tom having had a trial with Clyde at one time, and ultimately going on to be a director of the club. George’s younger brother is Bobby Clark, the former Aberdeen and Scotland goalkeeper, who himself played four games for Clyde in the early 1980s.
George started going to see Clyde in the early fifties, and Bobby recalls the brothers going to see every game in our Scottish Cup triumph of 1955, except the semi-final replay against Aberdeen. This was an early kick-off midweek replay at neutral Easter Road, so father Tom refused to let the boys miss school for that game. George’s all-time favourite player, Archie Robertson, of course played a pivotal role in that successful Scottish Cup run, with the famous equaliser direct from a corner in the 1-1 draw with Celtic in the first game of the final.
George’s daughter Lorna was also happy to share some family memories:-
”My sisters Heather, Fiona and I all have happy memories of attending games at Shawfield with Dad. When we stopped attending, he found great companionship at the games with his lifelong friend, Hamish Brodie, and in later years his lovely pal, Denis Ward, drove him to Broadwood for every home game. My sisters and I would turn up for the big games – Dad called us glory hunters!
“Dad was a season ticket holder until he was no longer able to make it along. In recent years he’d listen to the radio and track the score online. He loved football, and he especially loved Clyde FC. The photo was taken on the day of the play-off final in 2019. He was delighted with promotion, just as he would have been with Saturday’s scoreline!”
The family will welcome any Clyde supporter to the funeral, the details of which are as follows:-
The service will be at Cairnlea Parish Church, Airdrie on Monday 12th May at 1:30pm followed by cremation at Daldowie Crematorium (West Chapel) at 2:45pm.
