Hibernian 5-0 Clyde

The Bully Wee got their 2022-23 Premier Sports Cup campaign off to a harrowing start this afternoon, as Hibs romped to a 5-0 victory with all goals being scored in the opening half.

Danny Lennon handed five players their Clyde debuts and there were also starts for the returning Ross Lyon and Ray Grant, with the latter captaining the team.

The opening quarter of an hour passed without incident before Christian Doidge narrowly missed the target with a header at the back post.

He put his side into the lead less than a minute later though after Elias Melkersen’s cross from the by-line deflected off Peter Grant and looped over the head of Neil Parry, allowing Doidge to bundle into the net.

Melkersen then added a second for his side in the 23rd minute, when he had time in the box to control the ball and drill a low shot through two defenders and into the corner of Parry’s goal.

The floodgates then opened as Doidge got his second in the 28th minute, chipping over Parry after being played in by Jake Doyle-Hayes and then bagged his hat-trick a minute later after slack defending allowed him to poke home from close range.

Clyde’s only effort of the day came from a Ross Cunningham free-kick on the edge of the box, but he fired over the target.

Josh Campbell then added a fifth moments before the interval with Peter Grant unable to keep his low shot out of the net.

The second half proved to be a fairly quiet affair with neither goalkeeper having a save to make.
