Clyde 4-0 Motherwell Colts
The Bully Wee registered their first win of the season as they cruised to a 4-0 victory over Motherwell Colts in the second round of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup at Broadwood this evening.
Liam Allison was one of seven changes Danny Lennon made to the side from Saturday’s defeat in Kirkcaldy, with the ex-East Stirlingshire player, who signed an amateur contract earlier today, slotting in at left-back.
Allison was involved in the opening goal after just six minutes. His long throw into the box was headed on by Declan Fitzpatrick, and it fell to David Goodwillie at the back post. He had plenty of time to pick his spot and slotted past Peter Morrison.
Mark Lamont then came close a minute later when his drive from outside the box was tipped behind by Morrison.
The lead should have been doubled after Goodwillie travelled into the box, beating a couple of Motherwell defenders on the way before squaring the ball to Fitzpatrick, but his tame effort from close range was held by Morrison. The ‘keeper also saved a volley from Lamont before the interval.
Motherwell Colts only effort on target during the game came from Jake Carroll, but David Mitchell held his free-kick with ease.
Clyde continued to dominate after the break and a second goal was scored just before the hour mark. Darren Smith played a clever ball to Goodwillie who raced clear on goal. His shot came off the post and rebounded to Ally Love, who rifled it into the empty net.
Love then turned provider when his deep corner was played to the back post, where Martin McNiff was on hand to head the ball over Morrison and into the net from a tight angle.
The Bully Wee stroked the ball around confidently for the remainder of the match, with Ray Grant dictating a lot of the play, and Darren Smith was unlucky not to increase Clyde’s lead on a couple of occasions.
A fourth goal did come in the closing stages when McNiff nipped in ahead of his marker and stooped to head home Lamont’s free-kick.
It was only Clyde’s second victory in the tournament in the last decade, and they now take their place in tomorrow’s draw for the third round.
