Airdrieonians 3-1 Clyde

The Bully Wee’s poor start to the Ladbrokes League 1 season continued with a defeat in Airdrie today.

Alex Petkov, Tony Wallace and Chris Johnston came into the side that beat Motherwell Colts on Tuesday evening, with Liam Allison, Declan Fitzpatrick and Ally Love dropping out.

Clyde made the perfect start and opened the scoring inside the second minute. Mark Lamont returned a short corner to Chris Johnston, who then floated the ball into the centre of the box. David Goodwillie was amongst a crowd of players in the area, and he placed a header past David Hutton.

There wasn’t much in the way of goalmouth action for the remainder of the first half, though The Bully Wee defence did well to deal with a pacy Airdrie attack.

The Diamonds equalised two minutes after the restart when a low cross into the box was swept home by Kurtis Roberts.

Goodwillie thought he had a case for a penalty when he appeared to be caught by Hutton but referee Peter Stuart was unmoved and signalled for a goal kick.

The Clyde goal then led a charmed life when an Airdrie shot from distance cannoned off the underside of the crossbar and bounced down on the line. The rebound then also clipped the bar, before Martin McNiff cleared another effort off the line to safety.

The hosts took the lead with ten minutes to go as Callum Gallagher made a break down the left and squared the ball to Dale Carrick in the middle of the penalty area, who then proceeded to slot past David Mitchell.

Airdrie sealed all three points in style with a third goal in stoppage time. Gallagher was given plenty of time in the box to control a bouncing ball and hit a fine overhead kick which beat Mitchell and ended up in the net.
