John Seeks Right Mentality

John Rankin spoke to the press following Saturday’s 3-0 victory away to Berwick Rangers in Ladbrokes League 2.

The experienced midfielder had a busy afternoon, being involved in both of the opening goals and scoring the third goal from a free-kick in injury time.

“I’m delighted to get the three points first and foremost,” he said. “The last time against Berwick we made it more difficult for ourselves than we did today. We got into a commanding lead at half-time, but at 2-0 the next goal is really important. If the third goal had come earlier we would have been a lot more comfortable.

“I felt we overplayed at times, especially in the second half where we could have put the ball in the net. We decided to be a bit too clever, but that’s at least a sign of players enjoying themselves.”

The result topped off what was a commanding overall performance from Clyde. John said:-

“We certainly dominated the game. You can see the players are enjoying themselves and working for one another. You can see the desire and it’s games like last week at Peterhead, when you get a setback – our first in a number of weeks – and show the character to get back into it. We’ve went on to build on that today with a great three points.”

The win means that The Bully Wee have now gone ten games unbeaten in the league, including five straight wins. John concluded:-

“We’ve put a run together and we’ve got momentum behind us. The break next week probably comes at the wrong time, but it’s a chance for boys who are carrying a knock to overcome them and be ready for a massive second half of the season. We’ve put ourselves in a good position just now but that’s all it is, a good position.

“We’ve given ourselves a chance. The mentality needs to be right between now and the end of the season. We might not dominate games like we did today, but we still need to win. These past two games are the type that you look at the beginning of the season as tough fixtures, but we’ve taken six points from six.

“It’s a massive three points and a very good team performance.”
