Clyde United Take on MSPs

Clyde FC’s community side, Clyde United welcomed a team of MSPs to Broadwood Stadium on Friday for a friendly match in preparation for United’s new league campaign.

Following a well contested match, the MSP team, led by politicians such as Ken Macintosh and Brian Whittle, ran out 4-3 winners.

The match was viewed by a small number of spectators, including Clyde chairman Norrie Innes. Norrie said: “The occasion was very uplifting. It shows the pleasure that football can bring, with everyone supporting and encouraging each other. It is all about playing and pulling together and that is what Clyde FC is all about.”

The Clyde United programme was set up in 2016 as a support network to help people from Cumbernauld and the surrounding areas who have suffered from mental illness, disability and addiction through football. Since being formed, the team have improved hugely.

Community Development Manager Tom Elliot said: “Since the programme started, the boys have come on leaps and bounds. There is a real sense of togetherness and the results are starting to show both on and off the park.”

Scott, who works with North Lanarkshire Leisure, has been coaching the team since it was formed and said: The whole team’s understanding of the game has improved hugely – their shape and fitness is constantly getting better.”

The programme has made a huge difference to participants. Hugh McElroy, who plays with United added: “Just being part of a team helps your mental health, as well as keeping you fit and preoccupied.”
