Davie Laing

All at the club are extremely saddened by the passing on Saturday morning of one the club’s great stars of the Fifties, Davie Laing.

Clyde paid Hearts the princely sum of £6,000 (about £500,000 in today’s money) to bring Davie to Shawfield and he became, as one journalist put it, “the best buy Clyde have made in years”.

Of all the great games Davie played, the 1955 Scottish Cup Final and subsequent replay, which saw Clyde win the Scottish Cup for only the second time, must be the pinnacle. Rated by many as the Man of the Match in both games, Davie was rightly lauded for his abilities on the field, with one journalist suggesting “One medal for the other 10 Clyde players, two medals for Laing”.

Davie was honoured by the club in 2011, when he became one of the first inductees into the club’s Hall of Fame.

There will be a tribute to Davie in the matchday programme for Saturday’s game against Dumbarton.

The family have advised that Davie’s funeral will be in Fife, and they will provide details when they become available. All wishing to attend will be welcome.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Davie’s family at this time.
