Gormley Equals Post-War Record

Clyde forward David Gormley scored his seventh goal of The Bully Wee’s 2016-17 Scottish Cup campaign on Tuesday night – equalling the post-war club record for a single season.

Gormley scored two against Arbroath in the Third Round, three against Stirling Albion in the Fourth Round replay and one in each match against Ayr United in the Fifth Round.

John Coyle achieved the same total in 1957-58, when Clyde went on to lift the trophy at Hampden.

Speaking after the match on Tuesday, the 28-year-old said:-

“I’ve been happy scoring in the cup but I’ve got the boys to thank as well; Scott Linton with the ball in tonight and Peaso playing me in on Saturday for instance. It wasn’t just about me.”

The tie ended in defeat despite a commendable effort by Gormley and the rest of the squad. He continued:-

“There are a lot of unhappy boys in the dressing room, it was a kick in the teeth.

“The performance was good and I don’t think a neutral would have known which team was in League 2 and which was in the Championship. We’ve done ourselves proud over the two games and getting this far.

“We can turn this into a positive, starting at Elgin on Saturday. We need to carry this form into the league and make sure we get into the play-offs.”
