Barry Delighted With New Signings

Clyde manager Barry Ferguson spoke to the official website after a very busy few days, as the first team squad continues to take shape ahead of the 2016-17 season.

At the end of last week, the club confirmed the addition of five new signings; Matt Flynn, Martin McNiff, Phil Johnston, Jordan Lowdon and Ewan McNeil.

All of those players have signed two-year contracts with The Bully Wee and Barry was delighted to have secured them all in advance of the new campaign and the pre-season schedule, which will be outlined soon. He said:-

“All of the boys we’ve brought in are at a good age. One of my remits this summer was to bring in some younger players and also bring energy to the side. All of them do that and I’m delighted to have got them all over the line, as there was a lot of hard work involved over several months.”

Speaking about each player individually, Barry continued:-

“We’d been looking at Matty for a number of months. He’s a goalscoring midfielder, which is hard to come by at our level, but he scored 15 goals for Annan last season and that’s exceptional at any level. It’s something I think we’ve missed, goals from the central midfield area. I’ve kept my eye on him over the past six months and a few clubs were chasing him, so I’m delighted to have concluded the deal to bring him to Clyde.

“Jordan impressed me throughout all of last season. He’s a young and hungry player; an attack-minded full back with great energy, who can also put a great delivery into the box. He was really keen to come to Clyde from the first conversation we had. That was really something that shone through when we spoke, his general attitude and his desire to come to the club.

“On the other side of defence we’ve brought in Ewan, who is similar to Jordan in the qualities he’ll bring to the side. We tried to sign him before he went to Berwick Rangers but we couldn’t get the deal done, but we’ve kept a close eye on him and I think he was Berwick’s best player last season. All of the reports we’ve had on him have been positive and he’s another attack-minded player with high energy levels.

“Phil has something that is hard to find at our level – rip-roaring pace. We missed that last season and it was an area we identified early on that we needed to improve on. He is a hard worker and can also play in various positions which is great for the squad. Phil is another player at a good age and, yet again, someone that had a great appetite to come to Clyde and be involved with what we’re aiming to do.

“Martin is another player that stood out when playing against us last season. We needed a centre half that can defend but also play football and he fits that bill. Again, we had to work really hard to get him in and we started working on the deal very early on. He’s the type of player that wants to learn and get better. First and foremost he’s a good defender but he is also comfortable on the ball and that will be important to us.”

Barry also confirmed that he was continuing to work extremely hard to bring further new players to the club and that he was currently in advanced talks with players about a move to Clyde.
