Queen’s Park 2-1 Clyde

Queen’s Park took a big step towards the Ladbrokes League 1 play-offs with a hard-fought derby win over Clyde at the National Stadium this afternoon.

With a depleted squad to choose from, Barry Ferguson made three changes to the starting line-up following last week’s match against East Fife, with John Gibson, John Gemmell and Scott Linton all coming in.

The first chance of the match fell to Gemmell, but the forward’s shot on the turn sailed over the bar.

Following that, The Bully Wee had a glorious chance to take the lead when a neat breakaway led to David Gormley being put clean through on goal. However, after opting to round the ‘keeper rather than shoot, Gormley then tried to find Jamie Watson rather than find the net and the chance was lost.

The home side took advantage of that let off and quickly took the lead via the penalty spot, after Scott McMann brought down Paul Woods.

Shortly after that, The Spiders almost made it 2-0 when Liam Brown’s shot just missed the top corner.

A second goal did arrive though early in the second half, when Vincent Berry took advantage of some sloppy defending and a lucky break to stab the ball past John Gibson.

As Clyde pushed to get back into the match, Gormley had another sight of goal but Jordan Kirkpatrick found himself in the way of the ball.

Kirkpatrick was then involved again as Clyde did score on the hour mark, with Mark McLaughlin heading his cross back across goal and Gemmell was in the right place to apply the finish from close range.

With time running out, McLaughlin hit the bar with a header before Scott Linton smashed the same piece of woodwork in injury time, with his effort from the rebound frustratingly drifting wide after taking a deflection.

The result leaves The Bully Wee needing a win against Stirling Albion at Broadwood next week to guarantee a place in the end of season play-offs.
