Clyde 2-0 Peterhead

The Bully Wee opened their 2011-12 league campaign in style this afternoon, with an encouraging victory over a strong Peterhead side.

There was little to choose between the sides during an intriguing first half, with chances on goal limited. The visitors were the first to come close though, when Martin Bavidge turned in the box and narrowly shot wide.

However, with the half-time whistle about to blow, the match was lit up by a wonderful Clyde goal. John Sweeney (right) picked up a loose ball in midfield, moved towards goal and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net from distance.

After the break, the lead could have been doubled when Liam Cusack hit the post after being set up by debut man Michael Oliver.

The Blue Toon, with plenty of experience on show, inevitably pressed for an equaliser and tested Filip Mentel on a few occasions, but the on loan ‘keeper continually displayed safe handling.

Jim Duffy’s men managed to grab an important second goal on the 75 minute mark. A long throw by Sweeney was flicked on by Brian McQueen and Steph McDonald moved well to get another touch on the ball, directing it into the bottom corner of the net.

That prompted Peterhead to commit even more men forward and they managed to carve out a couple more chances before the end of the match, notably hitting the bar from close range as full-time approached.

The three points were successfully secured though, sending The Bully Wee support home happy after an entertaining encounter.
