John Mailer
The club was saddened to hear of the death of former striker John Mailer. John , 45, had been battling illness for the past 5 years and his funeral was held on Monday in Killearn where John was a farmer.
John was a popular striker who was a member of the Clyde side during the mid to late eighties. The club at that time was managed by John Clark and based at Firhill following our departure from Shawfield.
John’s time at Clyde will best be remembered from his part as a target man in the Bully Wee side which hit the headlines. Clyde took the First Division by storm in 1988 because of their fast attacking football and goal scoring prowess. Goals were not a problem and the team were a handful for all opposing defences including most notably a 5-1 victory at Cappielow, against Premier League Morton in the League Cup.
John led the line admirably for the team that earned the nickname “Clyde hotshots” and he was certainly an important member of the side that so entertained the Bully Wee faithful that season.
The club wishes to send its condolences to John’s family and friends at this sad time.
