Clyde Under 13S Capture Cup

Clyde’s Under 13 youth team competed in the Helensburgh Bi-Centennial Tournament held on the Bank Holiday weekend from Friday 31 May to Monday 3 June at Helensburgh Rugby Club. By the end of the week-end they had won a trophy.

The other teams in Clyde’s Group A were Leven Thistle, Giffnock S.C., Clyde Centre and a strong represenative side from Canada, B.C.Soccer (British Columbia Soccer Association). After a 2-2 draw against Leven, Clyde faced a strong BC. Soccer team who were not only stronger but quicker to the ball than Clyde and B.C. Soccer won 4-1.

Clyde could now only finish second in their group and needed two good displays with plenty of goals to boost ther goal average which they duly did by winning 14-0 against Giffnock and 9-0 against Clyde Centre. These results meant they finished second in the group and would play the winners of Group B in the semi-finals, which was a Mid-Wales league select.

With the rain pouring down it was decided to play the match 15 minutes each way. Clyde were on top for most of the game but were unable to find the net and the game went to penalties. Clyde scored their five penalties with goals from Raymond Inglis, Nicky Johnston, Allan Dallas, John Telfer and David McNaught. Trialist goalkeeper Sam Goldfarb. who has since signed for Clyde, saved a penalty and Clyde won 5-4. In the other semi B.C. Soccer defeated Livingston B.C. 4-2.

The Clyde team and coaches were looking forward to again playing B.C.Soccer as it was felt they had not done themselves justice in the group match. The team changed their system and played 5-4-1. This change and an inprovement in the players’ attitude saw the Bully Wee boys deservedly and comfortably win 1-0 with a first half goal from left back John Telfer who hit a low angled shot past an excellent B.C. Soccer keeper.

This was not only an excellent win but a chance for the Clyde coaches to see three trialist players all of whom they signed. The successful squad was 1-Chris Hanley, 2-Gary McDevitt, 3-John Telfer, 4-Tony Stevenson, 5-Alan Dallas (pictured and captain) 6-Nicky Johnston, 7-Steven Cusik, 8-Mark Gallagher, 9-David Ferrie, 10-Paul McLean, 11-Raymond Inglis, 12-Willie Duncan, 14-David McNaught, 15-Piero Quintiliani, 16-Stephen Donnelly, 17-Sam Goldfarb.
