Rangers eased through to the Third Round of the Petrofac Training Cup at Ibrox this evening, leaving Clyde to reflect on a very tough result.

Barry Ferguson did not include himself in the squad as he returned to his old club but John Sweeney was added to the midfield in the only change from the side that faced Queen’s Park last week.

A crowd of just 11,190 decided to attend the Monday night fixture but they saw The Gers dominate the match from the start. Ironically, it was Clyde’s first threat on Steve Simonsen’s goal that eventually led to Rangers’ opening goal, with Kris Boyd finishing off a quick counter-attack from inside the box.

Fraser Aird doubled the lead with a shot that Jamie Barclay couldn’t quite keep out and it got worse for The Bully Wee when Boyd converted from close range again.

Any chance of Clyde regrouping at half-time was blown away by late additions to the scoreline from Lee McCulloch and Lewis Macleod as the home side took a 5-0 advantage into the break.

Ferguson made three changes before the restart but Macleod got Rangers’ sixth goal after 65 minutes and a heavy scoreline was soon completed by a second for McCulloch and a hat-trick strike for Boyd.

There was a shred of consolation for the Clyde support in injury time, with Kevin Watt finishing well from a tight angle following some good play on the right wing.

It was a difficult night for The Bully Wee and, despite the obvious gulf in the two clubs’ ambitions and resources, the manner of defeat and level of performance was undoubtedly disappointing.
