Recap
This wasn’t the worst game of football but it fell well short of the high entertainment that was expected. Both teams cancelled each other out very effectively and as a result goal mouth incidents were few and far between.
Clyde’s resources were stretched to the limit as injuries were sustained during the game so a point against our nearest rivals shouldn’t be sniffed at.
Eddie Malone began his first Clyde game at left back and Scott Wilson continued in central defence. Aaron Conway also retained his left attacking berth from last week as Clyde began in a 4-3-3 formation.
The formation quickly changed to 3-5-2 as both sides packed the midfield and stalemate ensued. It was one of those games where the players were passing the ball to each other at chest height and nothing seemed to come off as planned.
It took Clyde almost 40 minutes to bring a save out of Hinchcliffe as Conway shot for goal. Apart from that Harty and Wilford couldn’t hold the ball up and both teams looked very feeble as they approached the opposition box.
Craig Bryson didn’t reappear after the interval and Arbuckle took over the right wing-back berth. At last we had some drama as an early cross into the Clyde box saw O’Neil head the ball onto the far post and then put the rebound the wrong side of the post.
Clyde were further hampered as Wilson went off injured to be replaced by Gilhaney. With a distinct height advantage St Mirren’s best hope seemed to be corners and free kicks but Clyde’s defence coped readily enough.
Eventually Clyde began to gain control in the middle but only a solitary Conway shot kept Hinchcliffe interested.
Bradley replaced Conway as Clyde pressed for a goal but St Mirren were in no mood to give up a point as the game fizzled out.
With the attention of the football public focussed on Clyde and St Mirren, this was a poor advert for the top two teams. Neither side had the invention or desire to win the game. Still, the unbeaten run continues and considering the attack and midfield are still getting to know each other surely the style of play will improve with time. Full marks to the defence.
Clyde Star Ratings (*****)
Halliwell **** Confident but not much to do.
Mensing ***** Back to his best in several positions.
Malone *** Steady if unspectacular debut.
Wilson **** Another good display and hopefully not seriously injured.
Potter ***** The memory of AK fades with each game from the captain.
Sheridan **** Usual guile and grit from the old head.
Bryson **** Loads of heart and unlucky to miss the second half.
Gibson ** Off the pace today and didn’t look 100% fit.
Wilford ** One of those ‘wrong studs’ type of days and needs to gain match fitness.
Harty *** Stacks of effort but no service.
Conway *** Carved a couple of shots for himself but very quiet mostly.
Arbuckle *** Good application in an unfamiliar position.
Gilhaney *** Saw plenty of the ball but still missing that vital spark.
Bradley ** Not much time to make an impact.
