Ian Stewart
All at the club were saddened to learn of the recent passing of lifelong fan Ian Stewart at the age of 78.
Although Ian was born in Head of Muir, near Bonnybridge, and spent his entire life in the nearby villages of Banknock and Haggs, his love for Clyde came through his dad, who was originally from Parkhead. Ian’s dad had been a regular at Shawfield from a young age, having been taken to matches by his uncle.
Ian worked as a baker throughout his career, beginning his apprenticeship with Rennie’s in Kilsyth before spending most of his working life in Stirling, where he was bakery manager at Olivers. He later worked for Asda in Falkirk until his retirement.
Ian’s two great passions in life were his family and Clyde. He was a regular at matches until recent years, when ill health prevented him from attending. He continued, however, to follow the team closely, with his son Mark dropping in after every game to give him a full debrief on the match. Ian also enjoyed watching Clyde TV on his iPad.
His passion for all things Clyde even extended to the Reserve League, with Ian regularly attending matches during the 1980s and 1990s. His favourite Clyde player was Pat Nevin, and even after Nevin left for Chelsea, Ian continued to follow him closely. At a time when live football on television was rare and Chelsea matches were generally only shown in England, Ian would drive down to a hotel in Largs whenever Chelsea were the weekend’s live game, as the hotel was able to pick up an English television signal.
The thoughts and condolences from all at the club are with his wife Anne, sons Mark and Barry, daughter-in-law Francine and grandchildren Abbie, Matthew, Bethany and Emma at this sad time.
