Iain Johnston

Everyone connected to the club was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of devoted Bully Wee supporter Iain Johnston.

Iain passed away at the age of 67 after bravely battling Motor Neurone Disease. A lifelong Clyde supporter, he spent much of his life in the Arden area of Glasgow. As a young lad, he cherished trips to Shawfield with his father and two brothers, Colin and Billy — Billy even served as a ball boy before later relocating to Canada. Iain was captivated by Clyde’s great team of 1967 that finished third, idolising Harry Hood. One of his fondest memories was a late 1960s floodlit clash against Motherwell, when Stan Anderson’s dramatic late header secured victory. He would later recall it as one of his best nights at the old ground, with the atmosphere electric. Iain did indeed love our time at Shawfield and witnessing its many characters of that time, such as, Angus, Eddie and Peter the Priest.

Though work took him south and abroad, Iain’s passion for Clyde never wavered. He and Colin, inseparable in their love for the club, became well-known faces among our junior-era supporters. Affectionately dubbed “The Twins” by fellow fans, the somewhat colourful duo travelled home and away, their enthusiasm unmistakable. One memorable trip saw them drive to Dingwall, sleep overnight in the car, freshen up at the local swimming pool, and then watch The Bully Wee.

Who could forget their black Saab rolling into Broadwood, windows down, voices raised in song, proudly declaring their devotion, yes truly, singing their hearts out for the Bully Wee.

Sadly, brother Colin passed six years ago, and despite his own health challenges, Iain continued to attend as many matches as possible, traveling with the Glasgow Branch. His love for Clyde remained steadfast throughout, facing his illness with extraordinary courage.

Beyond football, Iain was a devoted family man. He adored his four daughters and cherished his grandchildren. He was known for his strength, kindness, and his refusal to complain, despite his health struggles.

Iain’s funeral will take place on Friday, June 20, at Craigton Crematorium at 11:30am, followed thereafter at Thornliebank Bowling Club. All are welcome to pay their respects.

The condolences of all at the club go out to Iain’s partner Brenda, and his daughters Sarahlee, Chelsey, Elizabeth and Kirsty at this difficult time.
