Willie Callaghan

All at the club were saddened to hear about the passing of Willie Callaghan, who had two spells for the club on loan.

Willie made his Clyde debut at the end of March 1989, in a home league match against Partick Thistle at Firhill, and he retained his place for the next five games. Willie missed the penultimate league match of that season given it was at East End Park against Dunfermline Athletic, the club that had loaned Willie to Clyde, and he also missed out on the final game of the season, the famous 2-0 win over St Johnstone at Firhill to retain our First Division status.

Willie came back to Clyde at the start of the following season and played five games, scoring 2 goals; one against Partick Thistle in a 2-2 draw at Firhill, and one against Alloa in a 2-4 defeat at Firhill.

Overall Willie played 11 games for Clyde, scored 2 goals.

Speaking from a personal level, Club Historian Gordon Sydney said:-

“I kept in touch with Willie after he agreed to do an interview with me for the Bully Wee Talking section of the Clyde View a few years ago, and I’ll miss our regular conversations. He was a lovely guy who just lived and breathed football.”

The thoughts and condolences from all at the club are with Willie’s family and friends at this sad time.
